What is
the handball
introductory program

The Handball Introductory Program (HIP) is a national initiative designed to introduce students to the fast-paced world of handball in a safe, inclusive, and engaging way. With flexible delivery options, HIP creates more opportunities to play, anywhere, anytime.

Through active, developmentally appropriate sessions, HIP fosters a lifelong enjoyment of sport while building physical literacy, movement skills, game sense, and social-emotional learning.

At the heart of HIP is mini handball, a modified, non-contact 4+1 format tailored for young and beginner players. Mixed-gender teams, smaller sides, and simplified rules ensure more touches, equal participation, and a welcoming environment for all. Mini handball is played with a soft-skinned, modified ball, allowing players to try every position, including goalkeeper, in a safe and supportive setting.

This builds confidence, lays the groundwork for progression in the sport, and keeps the focus on enjoyment, development, and learning through play, the core principles of the HIP approach.

How does it Work?

The Handball Introduction Program (HIP) embraces the philosophy of mini handball, a modified and inclusive version of the sport designed to support skill development in young and beginner players.

In mini handball, each team is made up of four court players and one goalkeeper (4+1), and the game is played as a noncontact version of traditional handball. Mixed gender teams are encouraged, promoting inclusivity and equal participation from the outset.

This format provides young players with more opportunities to handle the ball, develop individual technical and tactical skills, and explore basic group concepts through real gameplay. With smaller teams and a simplified structure, the game is more accessible, welcoming, and less intimidating, especially for those new to the sport.

HIP is flexible and can be delivered in schools, clubs, and community settings. Keep an eye out for programs in your area, or express your interest to stay updated on future opportunities.
